William Wong (黄偉廉) was introduced to Master Cheung Chung Chiu (張松照) by his father in the early 90’s after an official disciple introduction ceremony. He received training from Master Cheung Chung Chiu the “old school” way on the roof top of an old Hong Kong building in Wan Chai (灣仔).
Master Cheung Chung Chiu was the student of Grandmaster Guy Lai (黎應就). They were friends since childhood in Hong Kong. Master Cheung Chung Chiu is the most generous teacher. He teaches his students with no reservation. He even introduced William Wong to his Kung Fu brother (Si Hing) (師兄) Master Ng Goi Ball (伍巨波) for advance training at a later stage. Master Cheung Chun Chiu’s teaching focus on the combat and practical elements of Wing Chun. Both Master Cheung Chung Chiu and Master Ng Goi Ball were the earliest disciples of Grandmaster Guy Lai. Grandmaster Guy Lai was the earliest disciple of Grandmaster Jiu Wan (Chiu Wan) (招允). Grandmaster Guy Lai was the famous action choreographer who made the Wing Chun movies “Prodigal Son” ( 敗家仔) and “Warrior Two” (贊先生與找錢華) in the 80s. These 2 movies are still considered to be the classic movies with most authentic Wing Chun moves today. Grandmaster Jiu Wan (Chiu Wan) was born in Foshan (佛山), Guangdong Province (廣東省) of China. Grandmaster Jiu Wan (Chiu Wan) ’s family was a famous Wing Chun Family. He first started learning Wing Chun at the age of 8 from his uncle Jiu Jow (Chiu Jow) (招就), who was the student of Chan Yu Min (陳汝棉). Chan Yu Min was the son of Chan Wa Shun (陳華順). Chan Wa Shun was Yip Man’s (葉問) Wing Chun teacher. Grandmaster Jiu Wan has already established his own Wing Chun school in China before moving to Hong Kong. Grandmaster Jiu Wan (Chiu Wan) was from the same town as Yip Man, and they were friends before moving to Hong Kong. They used to work together as police officers in China. Grandmaster Jiu Wan (Chiu Wan) followed his uncle Jiu Jow’s recommendation to seek further advance training from Grandmaster Yip Man after he moved to Hong Kong. Grandmaster Jiu Wan (Chiu Wan) was accepted as the official disciple of Grandmaster Yip Man when they were reunited. He was one of the only few students who has received the official disciple introduction ceremony from Yip Man. Before Grandmaster Yip Man passed away, he invited everyone from the martial art community and arranged a special ceremony. In the ceremony, Grandmaster Yip Man awarded Grandmaster Jiu Wan (Chiu Wan) with a plaque/signage (牌匾), on which was written “The official doctrine of tradition Wing Chun – awarded by Yip Man” (詠春正統-葉問題). In Chinese tradition, this signifies the nomination of official successor by Yip Man. Grandmaster Jiu Wan (Chiu Wan) was the only student who received this honour from Grandmaster Yip Man. The only Wing Chun school that Grandmaster Yip Man ever officially authorised by presenting the plaque for any of his students was for Jiu Wan (Chiu Wan)’s school. Grandmaster Jiu Wan (Chiu Wan) has many famous students like the famous movie star Ti Lung (狄龍) and actor Lee Hoi Sung (李海生) and Grandmaster Guy Lai, who was the action choreographer of the famous Wing Chun movies “Prodigal Son” and “Warrior Two”. Unfortunately, Grandmaster Jiu Wan (Chiu Wan) died in 1973, just one year after the death of Grandmaster Yip Man in 1972. Grandmaster Jiu Wan (Chiu Wan)'s Son, Master Chiu Hung Kwok is currently teaching in Hong Kong. For more information about his school, please visit his website at http://www.chk-wingchun.com. Ivan Ozegovic is a student of Master Chiu Hung Kwok. He is currently teaching in Zagreb of Croatia. For more information about his school, please visit his website at http://www.yang.hr. |
